FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE DEGREE PROJECT OFFERS $12,000 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP TO FIRST-TIME 9TH GRADERS AT BRADLEY TECH

Milwaukee, WI, November 17, 2011… Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School (Bradley Tech) announced Thursday that it will be offering all first-time 2011 9th graders an opportunity to earn a college scholarship of up to $12,000, courtesy of The Degree Project. The scholarship was made possible through a partnership between the Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and Affiliates (Great Lakes) and Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS).

First-time Bradley Tech 9th graders, due to graduate in 2015, will be automatically awarded the $12,000 college scholarship as long as they maintain a minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average and 90 percent attendance rate through graduation.

“With graduation rates for students of color in Milwaukee at an all-time low, this is a real positive shot of energy for college prospects at Bradley Tech,” said 8th Assembly District State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa, who was in attendance for the scholarship announcement to all 9th grade students at Bradley Tech Thursday.

Bradley Tech is 1 of 18 Milwaukee Public Schools that has been selected by the Degree Project for the scholarship. Only current 9th grade students from the 18 selected schools may be eligible for the scholarship come graduation in 2015.

The scholarship can be used by students for a number of means during college including, but not limited to, tuition, fees, books and housing expenses.

Assistant Principal in Charge Jody Bloyer added “this is one of the biggest opportunities for high school students anywhere, and we’re thrilled to be able to give our students a head-start for college.”

The Degree Project is designed to pave the way for high school students to attend a two-year, four-year or technical college to further their education.
